MSSA - Maryland Saltwater Sportfishermen's Association

On Saturday, November 10^th,the MSSA sponsored the 15^th Annual Fall Fishing Tournament on the Maryland waters of the Chesapeake Bay.

There were 99 boats entered into this one-day event. MSSA had five official weigh-in stations located throughout the Bay which included Sandy Point State Park, Knapps Narrows, Taylors Island Family Campground, Calvert Marina in Solomons and Breezy Point Marina. Calvert Marina in Solomons was the busiest by far. The top four winning fish were brought into the Solomons weigh station.

The weather could not have been any worse with 20 to 25 knot winds blowing out of the north. Many of the anglers called it quits after a few hours of getting “beaten up” in those three to four foot seas!

Robert Harris of Prince Frederick captured first place when he entered his 36.65 pound rockfish. Captain Harris said that he was trolling near Buoy 73 when the fish hit his tandem rig at 8:30 in the morning. Dave Fischer of Pasadena claimed second place with his 29.45 pound rockfish. Captain Fischer was trolling a chartreuse umbrella rig in the 72A Buoy area when his winning fish hit his lure around 12:00. Coming in third with a 28.25 pound striper was Mike Schmidt of Hollywood, Maryland. Mike was also fishing near Buoy 72.

Captain Harris collected $14,306.50 in cash from the main event and skill level prizes. Dave Fischer was also in three of the four skill levels and won $6,441.90 in cash. Mike Schmidt had the foresight to enter all four skill levels and won $6,436 for third place.

There was a special category for bluefish. This was a “winner take all” segment and was captured by Robert Klimek of Bryans Roads, Maryland. Robert’s bluefish weighed in at 3.45 pounds and paid $2,310 for his effort.
